The Battle of Britain was the German attack on Britain. The Germans decided that they must destroy the RAF before they could invade with ground troops because the RAF could bomb ships as they crossed the channel. The Germans said that their destruction of the RAF by the German Airforce, the Luftwaffe, would be easy. They said that they had better planes, more troops and could train troops quicker.
Their attack on Britian by the Luftwaffe began on July 10th 1940 and raged on for 16 weeks. This did not go as planned. They had under estimated the power of the RAF. The RAF put up a good fight, and by September 17th, Hitler took his Luftwaffe out of Britain because he wasn't winning. He then began bombing cities.
By the time the fighting had ended in October 1940, 544 British airmen and an estimated 2662 German crew had died.
