In the summer of 1940, the skies of Britain crackled with gunfire and droned with plane engines, as nearly 5,000 pilots fought in the Battle Of Britain. This was among the most important battles of the Second World War as it stopped the Germans invasion of Britain. Hundreds of planes dived and duelled in fierce clashes called dog fights. The Germans expected an easy victory but the battle ended in an enormous victory for the British airforce.
